"He was kind of teasing them with his off-speed stuff, and his fastball was moving everywhere," the Toronto skipper said after Doug Drabek shut out the New York Yankees 2-0 on a 2-hit masterpiece.
Drabek registered 4 strikeouts and issued 1 walk in a gem of a performance.
"We just didn't swing the bats very well...or he just pitched good, whichever way you want to look at it," said the New York manager after the defeat.
To this point in the season, Drabek shows a 6-4 record, 13 starts, 89.1 innings, 51 strikeouts and a 2.82 ERA.
| || Los Angeles's Vaughn Suspended for 3 Games |
Saturday, June 12th, 1993
The Los Angeles Dodgers were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's loss to Detroit at Dodger Stadium. One in particular -- Greg Vaughn. Upon being called out on strikes, the Dodgers left fielder gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.
But the disgruntled Vaughn lingered on the field for another five minutes, berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.
But it got worse after the game, when Vaughn told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in Braille, so he can follow along."
For his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Vaughn for 3 games.
This season Vaughn is batting .240 with 54 hits, 12 home runs, 34 RBIs, 28 walks, .324 OBP and has scored 38 runs. He has played in 60 games.
| || Gant Swats 3 HR Against New York |
Friday, June 11th, 1993
Ron Gant, center fielder for the Milwaukee Brewers, had a whale of a game, rocketing three balls out of Shea Stadium against the New York Mets today in their 12-4 victory.
After the game he said, "I got some good pitches to hit and I creamed them. The first was a big, fat fastball and the last two were hanging curves... all three were mistakes."
For the game Gant was 3-3 with 8 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
Gant added, "There's a fine line between hitting home runs and line drives. Today I found the home run stroke."
Ron Gant hit a two-run home run off Mike Moore in the 2nd, hit a three-run home run off Clay Parker in the 4th, walked in the 6th, walked in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off Keith Comstock in the 9th.
Gant is currently batting .284 with 15 home runs, 52 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He has 59 hits in 208 at-bats.
